If we understand creative placemaking / placekeeping
as building our communities with and through the arts,
then it’s fair to say that creative placemaking is as old as humankind. Throughout the history of our species, human beings have always brought ritual, symbolism, performance, and beauty into the context of how we grow our communities. What sets the last ten years apart is the fact that we now have the capacity to incorporate arts-based practices into our professional toolsets. Community development practitioners can now take part in a growing conversation with other professionals about how to bring artists directly into cross-sector settings. Likewise, artists and arts organizations, both established and emerging, can expand and strengthen their reach and depth by using the arts for community goals in their own practice.
